WSU Tech launched the Navigate platform to provide an online connection between a student and their support network at WSU Tech. The app helps students see all the important things in one place and reminds them of what’s next. WSU Tech’s goal with Navigate is to guide each student to the right people and resources they need to persist to graduation. https://wsutech.campus.eab.com/

Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS) at Wichita State University. CAPS will continue to offer mental health services during the shut-down to WSU and WSU Tech students in a remote fashion. CAPS providers can help with obstacles such as: difficulties with depression, anxiety, and are available to consult via telephone or Zoom to help you develop a self-care plan for your mental wellness during this crisis.  Please call 316-978-4792 to set-up a remote consultation.  You can schedule with a receptionist by calling between 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday or leave a message and someone will call you back during that time. You can also Follow them at ShockersCAPS for tips on how to beat covid-19 stress.  If there is a mental health emergency, please call 911, the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or text “support” to the crisis text line at 741-741.

Student Services Spotlight Online Classes Support and Tips to be successful

We are here with your Top Tips to be successful in an Online Class…

1.Log into your class as soon as possible

I know, this is obvious, but starting off your class by logging in, learning the online learning platform and exploring the items posted by your instructor will help you to develop a plan of action to conquer your online class like a novice!

2. Read your Syllabus

Your syllabus is like a map to navigate your online class. You will find information like lists of assignments, due dates, book information, instructor contact information and more… This should be the FIRST thing you read for every online class and you should refer to it often.

3. Log in to your class regularly

If we have learned anything about the world in recent months, everything is always changing. This can sometimes be true in an online class as well… by logging in often this will keep you up to date on any potential schedule changes, updates on assignments and announcements.

4. Devote a certain time of day for your class

Treat your online class as an in-person class. The beauty of an online class is that they don’t have a set time so you can make it work in your schedule, however, without a plan, you plan to fail. So set a certain time of day to log in that way you aren’t tempted to push it off for something you would rather do when it comes up.

5. Don’t put your assignments off to the last minute.

You know that saying “Due Today, Do Today”… well that’s not the best mantra to have in an online class. Waiting until the last minute to finish your assignments will leave you with unnecessary stress and a good chance that technology will fail you (funny how that ALWAYS happens at the most inopportune times).

6. Use technology to your advantage

A world of knowledge is at your fingertips. There are TONS of different study aids available on the internet and apps. You can also set-up virtual tutoring at the WSU Tech tutoring center!

7. Connect with other students

Reach out to your other classmates to see if they are struggling with the same things you are, you are not the only student in the class.

8. Get to know your instructor & know how to contact them

You might be thinking this one is weird but to your instructor, you’re just a faceless name who either gets good grades or bad grades. Send a quick email to your instructor and introduce yourself. That personal connection will give them something else to think about when they are grading your work (It can’t hurt to get on your instructors’ good side!), PLUS they might have connections you will need in the future. “It’s all about who you know”

9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Your success is our success and we are your biggest fan! So, if you get stuck or need something, ask for help. You should reach out to your instructor, your advisor, the tutoring center or your Dean for help. We are all rooting for you! Let’s get you across that stage and a diploma in hand.

Student Services Spotlight Food pantry, Student food pantry is open

The WSU Tech Student Food Pantry is a place where students can come discreetly with no questions asked, and get a bag of groceries and supplies. Items vary from canned goods, Baby & Kid Goods, Toiletries and Cleaning Items. The Student Food Pantry first started off as donations by WSU Tech employees and as the need increased, so did the generous gifts from community partners like Dillon’s, Fidelity Bank and the Kansas Children’s Service League. We now have a pantry at each campus and students just have to ask an advisor if they would like to “shop” the pantry. While campuses are closed for the COVID-19 situation, the student pantry remains open on Thursdays from 1-4 PM at our City Center campus, located at 301 S. Grove.
