WSU Tech is experiencing a surge in enrollment figures this spring semester, with the college enrolling 5,173 students – an impressive 15.7% increase over last year’s figure. This marks the college’s largest year-over-year jump since over 10 years ago, with high school students contributing immensely to this success by enrolling 3,264 credit hours – 24% more than one year prior.

“At WSU Tech, we are proud to take an innovative approach towards meeting Wichita’s workforce needs,” said Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech. “Our efforts ensure that our students have access to financial assistance and relevant education- empowering them with the necessary tools for employment upon graduation. We strive every day for WSU Tech’s goal of raising need-based aid so that higher education can be a reality regardless of circumstance – further driving home our commitment to serve those in the communities where we live and work!”

WSU Tech attributes this unprecedented boost in enrollment thanks to increased interest from students looking to gain valuable skills and the availability of tuition-free scholarships. The college achieved significant enrollment growth in its machining and aviation programs due to the overall demand for skilled workers, bolstered by Wichita Promise scholarship opportunities. Welding, Construction Science/Carpentry and Business classes have consistently driven credit hour increases while General Education departments saw notable gains in Social Sciences, Natural Sciences & Allied Health, Humanities and English courses. In addition, the percentage of historically underrepresented minorities also rose 2%, largely due to a 1.3% uptick in Hispanic/Latino student numbers along with 62.8% first generation college attendee enrollments – highlighting WSU Tech’s commitment towards diversity initiatives within their educational landscape.
