Heroes MAKE America Expands Aviation Training Opportunities for Veterans in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (Mar. 7, 2025) – The Manufacturing Institute, in collaboration with WSU Tech and the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas, has introduced a new Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) prep training program designed to help transitioning service members and veterans enter the aviation industry. The initiative, supported by Textron Aviation, was highlighted at a recent luncheon in Wichita, bringing together industry leaders, local officials, and military representatives.

Heroes MAKE America, a program created by The Manufacturing Institute, focuses on equipping military personnel with the skills and certifications needed for careers in manufacturing. With the manufacturing sector facing ongoing workforce shortages, this program serves as a strategic bridge between the military and the industry, ensuring a steady pipeline of trained professionals.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu welcomed attendees, emphasizing the city’s strong ties to both aviation and the military. Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas President & CEO Keith Lawing followed with opening remarks before introducing Congressman Ron Estes (KS-04), who spoke on the significance of keeping veterans in Kansas through career opportunities in manufacturing.

The event featured an overview of the Heroes MAKE America initiative, led by The Manufacturing Institute’s Chief Program Officer, Gardner Carrick, who detailed the growing need for skilled workers in manufacturing. The discussion also included insights from Colonel Aaron J. Strode, Deputy Commander of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing at McConnell Air Force Base, who addressed the transition of military personnel into the workforce.

WSU Tech President Dr. Sheree Utash spoke at the event, emphasizing the program’s impact on workforce development and the critical role of partnerships in addressing industry needs. James Hall, Vice President of Aviation and Workforce Development at WSU Tech, provided details on the six-week A&P prep course, explaining how participants can obtain FAA certification through the training. The program aims to accelerate the transition for veterans and service members into high-demand aviation maintenance roles, a critical need for the industry.

Textron Aviation’s Senior Manager of Military Programs, John Buckley, closed the event with a discussion on the business case for industry participation in the program. He underscored the importance of addressing workforce shortages through partnerships like this, which not only help manufacturers secure skilled employees but also support veterans as they embark on new career paths.

With an increasing demand for trained aviation professionals, the new A&P prep training program is expected to play a key role in strengthening the workforce while providing valuable opportunities for those transitioning from military service to civilian careers.
