Kansas Technical Re/training Among Industry-targeted Networks (KanTRAIN)

Incorporating the usage of automated equipment into existing manufacturing programs in order to align with increasing automated processes in the industry. KanTRAIN is a $11,997,957 project that is 100% funded through the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program. WSU Tech received a portion of those funds, along with Washburn Tech, Flint Hills Technical College, and Garden City Community College. KanTRAIN is led by a project management team at Washburn University.

The purpose of this project is to deliver training programs to improve education and employment outcomes in Advanced Manufacturing and to address workforce needs by producing skilled workers in high-wage, high-skill jobs. KanTRAIN seeks to do this by:

  • Increasing the number of skilled employees in the workforce
  • Increasing and strengthening employer engagement with KanTRAIN-funded programs
  • Addressing any barriers or skills gap in local workforce
  • Working with Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas to provide outreach to potential WSU Tech students and assisting in job placement

What is the grant doing for WSU Tech?

  • Additional faculty were hired
  • Completely renovated Climate and Energy Control lab space and equipment at the City Center
  • Material Handling Robot in Machining
  • Robotic Welders in Welding
  • Drilling Motor for Aerospace Manufacturing
  • Revised curriculum and integration of third-party credentials into most KanTRAIN programs
  • Additional support for students their time in the program and in finding employment
