Meet the ‘Tech Tykes’: WSU Tech Launches Children’s Book Series to Spark Big Dreams in Little Learners
Co-authored by WSU Tech President Dr. Sheree Utash and Mandy Fouse, the public launch event will take place on April 19 at Exploration Place.
WICHITA, KS – WSU Tech is proud to announce the release of Tech Tykes, a new children’s book series co-authored by Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech, and Mandy Fouse, Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications. This series was designed to ignite imagination, boost confidence, and introduce young readers to exciting possibilities in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) careers.
Designed for children aged 4 to 8, each book features a different character, such as Ella the Engineer, Beckham the Biologist, and Paisley the Pilot, embarking on vibrant, relatable adventures that explore real-world careers. With colorful illustrations and engaging storytelling, the series encourages kids to dream big and see themselves as future problem-solvers and innovators.

“Tech Tykes aims to plant seeds with children, ignite excitement for careers they may not have previously considered, and encourage them to envision themselves as future leaders, creators, and changemakers,” said Dr. Sheree Utash. “This initiative also demonstrates our dedication to creating pathways that begin early and lead to bright futures. It’s about access, imagination, and the power of believing in each child.”
The official public launch will occur on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Exploration Place in Wichita. The event will include a live book reading by the authors, a special musical performance by Roy Moye III of STEMusic, an author Q&A, and more. Tickets are $10 and include a signed copy of one of the first three released books in the series for every attendee. Each child attendee will also receive a Tech Tyke activity book. The event is made possible with support from Koch.
“Writing the books for Tech Tykes has been incredibly rewarding,” said co-author Mandy Fouse. “We wanted to create stories that are both fun and meaningful, books that reflect our community, represent lots of voices, and help kids connect the dots between who they are today and who they might become.”
Each story in the Tech Tykes series draws inspiration from real-life programs offered at WSU Tech and aligns with its mission to prepare students for in-demand careers. Future plans include expanding the series and distributing books to classrooms, libraries, and homes throughout Kansas and beyond. All proceeds from the Tech Tykes series will support WSU Tech’s efforts to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem-solvers. Funds will enhance educational opportunities, ensuring young learners have access to hands-on experiences that spark a lifelong love of STEAM.
