New facility boosts pipeline of pilots, automation, and manufacturing talent.
WICHITA, Kan. — July 16, 2025 — Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology (WSU Tech) is excited to announce the expansion of the National Center for Aviation Training (NCAT), a major step toward preparing more skilled workers for careers in aviation, automation and advanced manufacturing and reinforcing Wichita’s place as the Air Capital of the World.
Designed by TESSERE and built by Crossland Construction Company, Inc., the new 85,500-square-foot facility and professional pilot training hangar will add modern classrooms, hands-on labs, and high-tech training spaces to WSU Tech’s NCAT campus. The expansion is an investment of more than $45 million in facilities and technology to support Wichita’s growing aviation, automation, and advanced manufacturing industries. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2025, with classes scheduled to start in January 2027.
“We are preparing the next generation of talent to meet industry needs, support innovation, and help secure the future of our region’s economy,” said Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech. “With this expansion, we are investing in Wichita and the state of Kansas by strengthening our ability to train students for high-demand careers in aviation, automation, and advanced manufacturing, sectors that continue to evolve and grow.”
The NCAT Expansion builds on vital groundwork laid by the $2.2 million ALOFT grant awarded to the Wichita Airport Authority in 2023. This investment facilitated airfield and pavement upgrades at Colonel James Jabara Airport, which in turn allowed WSU Tech to expand aviation mechanic and pilot training programs, key elements in preparing the next generation of skilled aerospace professionals.
“The ALOFT grant has literally paved the way for development at Jabara Airport, which is not only great for us but also significant for the community,” said Jesse Romo, Director of Airports, Wichita Airport Authority. “The grant allowed us to partner with WSU Tech to build out the infrastructure necessary for them to expand their educational programs that directly impact our aviation ecosystem through workforce development and educational programs. The NCAT campus was built on partnerships, and we’re happy to continue that spirit with this development initiative.”
Expanded Training Capacity with Workforce Impact
Once completed, the expansion is expected to serve an additional 1,450 students and trainees within the first three years. New and enhanced training areas will include:
- Emerging Aviation Training Centers
- Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Training Centers
- Professional Pilot Training Centers and Hangar
- High School Aviation Maintenance Technology Academy
The facility will also function as a hub for industry partners to train and upskill their existing workforce, enhancing employer readiness across the country.
A Model for Public-Private Workforce Solutions
Established in 2010, NCAT was purpose-built through a collaborative effort between industry, education, and government, with key support from the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of the aerospace industry, the 225,000-square-foot flagship campus has become a powerhouse for workforce development over the last 15 years.
Now, NCAT is entering a new phase of growth. The planned expansion will significantly increase training capacity and position WSU Tech to meet critical workforce demands in emerging and advanced aviation, manufacturing, and automation. The facility will provide the infrastructure, innovation, and flexibility to support both credit and non-credit learning opportunities. It will also serve as a hub for industry partners to upskill and train their workforce.
“Sedgwick County’s investment in NCAT from the very beginning has paid off for our community,” said Ryan Baty, Sedgwick County Commissioner. “This expansion will help make sure we have the skilled workforce needed for the aviation and manufacturing jobs that keep our economy strong.”
WSU Tech will host a groundbreaking ceremony in late August. For more information visit: WSUTECH.edu/NCATexpansion.
