Going to college with a GED
Is a GED enough to get me into college? You may be asking yourself that question if you are one of the over 400,000* people per year who complete and pass the GED test. If you have not yet completed your GED, there are options to get you started in the right direction.
GED to College Degree
Goodwill Industries of Kansas, Inc. has partnered with WSU Tech to provide the community with an affordable and efficient way to get your General Educational Development certificate. This 10 week GED Test Preparation Course offers morning or evening class times to fit your busy schedule. Four sessions are held each year and assessments are administered before and after each session.
GED + College = Accelerating Opportunity
Earn your GED while receiving career training at WSU Tech. Accelerating Opportunity provides a pathway for adults to gain new skills to get a good job. With education and credentials beyond high school, students have better options in today’s economy. Accelerating Opportunity helps students improve basic skills in reading, math and writing needed to prepare for the GED. English language services are also available. Earn college credit while earning your GED at the same time. You will be well on your way to a great career. There are financial assistance options available to help you transition into your future.
Can I get into college with a GED?
According to the GED Testing Service, 98% of all U.S. colleges and universities accept applicants with a GED diploma or certificate in lieu of a traditional high school diploma. College admissions offices typically require more than just a diploma from applicants. WSU Tech offers the COMPASS placement test. This free computerized test assesses reading, writing and math skills to determine which courses you are prepared for so you can be the most successful. If you have already taken the ACT, you can bring us your score. If your ACT scores meet the minimum requirements, you may be exempt from taking the COMPASS placement test.
What is the highest degree I can get with a GED?
The sky is the limit when it comes to what you can accomplish once you complete your GED. There are hundreds of degrees and fields out there, and trying to decide on one can be confusing, to say the least. Once you find a degree program, make sure you have thought about how to fit your new educational commitment into your life and the requirements for your chosen field of study.
Shocker Pathway
Shocker Pathway is a partnership between WSU Tech and Wichita State University (WSU) that provides an affordable, convenient and respected way to earn a two-year Associate of Arts (AA) degree. Shocker Pathway students earn their associate degree by beginning their studies at WSU Tech and earn up to 50 credits for transfer to WSU. Upon completion of an additional 15 credit hours at WSU, students will earn an AA degree from WSU. This is an easy and affordable option for the first two years of college.
Degree options at WSU Tech
There are many degree and certificate options available at WSU Tech. High tech and high wage careers start at WSU Tech. You can get a Certificate of Completion in just weeks in many areas of study and be on your way to a rewarding career. WSU Tech offers training in high demand fields with the option for a Technical Certificate and Associate of Arts (AA) degree. WSU Tech is accredited through the Higher Learning Commission and many of WSU Tech’s general education courses are part of the Kansas Board of Regents Seamless Transfer System and are guaranteed to transfer to public Kansas colleges and universities so you can take your education as far as you like.
How to get started
Getting started on your education path at WSU Tech is done is 5 easy steps.
Step 1: Apply; submit a free application for admission. Not sure which program you want to study? Check out all of our options on www.wsutech.edu to see which career path is right for you.
Step 2: Test; take the COMPASS placement test to determine which courses you are prepared to take. Have you attended another college? Send us your transcripts and you may be exempt from taking the placement test and preparatory classes. Did you take the ACT? Send us your test scores. You may be exempt from the placement test.
Step 3: File FAFSA; Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and explore other options such as grants, scholarships, loans, the WSU Tech payment plan and even tax credits to help make paying for college easier.
Step 4: Checklists; complete the checklist that is specific to the program you wish to study.
Step 5: Enroll; meet with an academic advisor at one of our enrollment centers at 4004 N Webb Road or 3821 E. Harry to enroll for classes starting soon.
